Food Review at The Authentic Indo-Chine Cuisine – The Golden Triangle, Queensbay Mall by our first guest writer Akui.
Last Saturday, my brother and I went to The Golden Triangle for the buffet promotion since he insisted on bringing me for a buffet dinner to celebrate my birthday.
Upon entering the restaurant, we feel like entering the restaurant in Golden Triangle (Thai-Vietnam-Laos) as their interior decorations are truly classical Indo-Chine style. Since we made reservations for two, the staff thought that we are a couple and arranged us to be seated at the couple area. With the dim lighting, wooden table and the rattan decorations, it brings out the feeling that you are in a village house, not the typical one in Malaysia of course but one with romantic tune.
The romantic and private couple seatings
As you all know, a typical buffet-goer will head for expensive food and would repeat order or have them again if they are good, but this theory does not apply to our case in Golden Triangle. We managed to try out only 7 dishes from the 3 pages menu. They are Tempura Fried Sotong, Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab, Sotong in Spicy Thai Sauce, Seafood Otak-Otak in Coconut, Tom Yam Seafood Soup, Thai Curry Powdered Prawn, and Belacan Fried Rice.
Umbra Juice
The drink I have chosen and recommend for this buffet is Umbra Juice. Cools and refreshing with perfect sensation of sour and sweetness.
Belacan Fried Rice
Fried rice with seafood and belacan paste.
+ At first glance this dish seems disappointing cause it's a bit damped, where a normal fried rice never meant to be. But after tasting it, I can feel the rice in grain
+ The nice mild belacan aroma as the taste
+ Fried with fresh prawns and sotong

Tempura Fried Sotong
Sotong or calamari fried with tempura powder.
+ Taste great. Crispy and not oily
+ Fried at the right timing and with the right temperature, hence it is not 'rubbery'
+ The freshness is there
+ Best eaten with the Thai sauce which came along with this dish
- Looks normal like the cuttlefish at any mamak stall or lok lok stall

Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab
Soft shell crab, deep fried.
+ Crispy all the way down unlike those in Sushi King or Sakae Sushi
- Still looks normal where you can get it in any Japanese restaurant, not Thai style
- Taste is bland, therefore we have to use the left over sauce in the previous dish

Thai Curry Powdered Prawn
Prawn stir fried with scrambled egg and Thai curry powder.
+ Not spicy though looks spicy, but I can’t blame the chef since it states “Not Spicy” in the menu
+ HUGE and fresh prawns, just take a look at the photo!
+ Syok!

Sotong in Spicy Thai Sauce
Stir fried sotong in Thai sauce.
+ It taste good and it is recommended to use the gravy as a sauce for the rice
+ Fresh sotong as usual
- Not within the expected spiciness, maybe it is customized for Malaysian standard

Seafood Otak–Otak in Coconut
Otak-Otak is fish mousse, stew and boiled with prawns and sotong in Santan milk.
+ The presentation is somewhat unexpected, unlike conventional otak-otak wrapped in banana leaf. They are not using a recycle coconut shell as you can still scrap up the coconut flesh
+ The ingredients are fresh
+ The santan milk and seafood combination make this dish perfect

TomYam Seafood Soup
This is a normal soup for everyone in Malaysia, so no point describing it.
+ Sour and Spicy – the way I love. The spiciness starts from the tongue at first sip till back to the throat! Beware! I was forced to order another glass of water because of this
+ The prawns and sotongs are fresh. Again....

Thap Thim Krop
Water chestnuts (the red pieces) boiled with santan milk and slices of jack fruits, served cold.
+ Sweet and refreshing especially with the santan milk aroma
+ Those with sweet tooth must try this.

Summary and Verdict
Quality: 4 Stars
To me it is not spicy enough especially the Sotong in Spicy Thai Sauce.
Quantity: 5 Stars
The portion is HUGE like the photos shown in their website, unlike KFC and McD where they state “for illustration purpose only". They serve in portion of minimum of 2 pax for each type of dish.
Freshness: 5 Stars
This is definitely there. I had written it in all the food I had tasted there.
Value for Money: 4 ½ Stars
Yeah, the food is great and the portion is big. Simply amazing!
Customer Service: 4 ½ Stars
Some of their staff could not speak or understand English since they are foreigners, from Thailand or Vietnam. This could be one of the reasons that makes this restaurant special, though. Anyhow their service is fast and accurate.
Summary: 4 ½ Stars
I hate to say this but my brother and I got defeated in this “buffet raid” in The Golden Triangle as we thought that we would be sitting there for a minimum of 3 hours and taste everything in the buffet menu. In actual fact we were there for 2 hours only. An advise, do go in large group of people to try out more.
Disclosure: I paid for the food myself and the above is my honest and independently written review of their menu.
